It is possible to bend metal without a torch, you do need a tig welder though.

1) Put the bar or rod or whatever in a vice. Set the machine to DCEN.

2) Using a heat setting that is not going to melt the steel. Usually 75 amps is a hot enough setting, use the peddle to get the heat right. Start out low and move up from there. Start an arc near where you want to bend the steel.

3) Watch for a small puddle to form on the steel.

4) Watch the puddle and move the torch around the piece. You don't need to go all the way around it, just make sure you spread the heat out some. This should take about 10 - 20 seconds.

5) Once you can see the heat on the steel through your mask cut the current. It should be bright red now. If it is not, you need more current.

6) Bend it to where you need it.

I have used this a few times, it is handy when an O/A torch is not available.

Heh...I think a lot of us are more likely to have an oxyacetylene torch, than a TIG welder.

Still good to know though!
