Well over the summer I want to get my plans together to start a giant project. My plans are, SAS, V8 swap, and make a custom flat bed.

First thing I will accomplish is the flat bed.
Im looking for a little inspiration on making a flat bed. I want to make it out of steal NOT wood, I was thinking a black diamond plate for the surface. I was thinking of using square tubing to make a bar behind the cab, somewhat like a roll bar and have 5" lights mounted on it. The thing I am trying to copy is from flatbed tow trucks, the bar behind the cab. I am not really sure on the whole design yet, I was thinking of having like 2/3 of the bed be frame width and a 1/3 be cab width, obviously behind the cab, then have extra plates to lock on when I wanted to haul quads or larger things.

I mostly want HELPFUL inspiration and advice on making a steal flat bed for my truck.

Heh...whore thread got closed, so now I'm going to whore your thread.
Actually, that sounds like a sweet project! I like the sound of the flatbed. If you like, I can get you some pics later on.

I figured, I might as well be the one to be the "one" to have a decent flat bed on a dime. I have never seen them around, especially on lifted trucks

If you look at the thread I did on welding metals of different thickness I have an example of building a shelf. I would start there on the floor of the bed, of course change the flat stock in the example to box tube. As for the diamond plate, I would use natural color as during welding the heat will change the color. Then after all is finished use a heavy duty coating such as POR-15. I would copy the support system under a stock S-10 bed, this way the mounts will line up correctly.

cool I'll check it out. I was thinking about the stock bolt up style but wasnt sure how to actually bolt it down. I would think that if I tapped the box tube, that it would stip out.

Cut an opening in the side of the tubing, that way you can get a wrench in there. Or, cut both sides open, weld a nut in then reweld the tube closed.

If you do weld in the nut make sure you:

1) put a bolt in the nut and also use a lock nut on the opposite end and tighten it. This will keep everything centered and keep the nut from distorting.

2) Paint the inside before you reweld the tube so that nothing rusts.

Another idea is to weld a bolt or stud in.

the stud would be better for me. I dont know what thickness metal I should use. I think 1/4 would be too thick and doesnt need to be that strong.

1/8" or 3/16" would be more than adequate

Do you think a 110 welder will be able to weld either of those thicknesses? Right now the only person I know that has a 220 welder is my brother and he doesnt have his electirc hooked up yet and probably not for a while. The only other person I would know that might have or be getting that size welder is my dad and he doesnt have 220 either. So now I would be stuck withe the 110 welder. If that dont work I guess I will have to wait.

A 110 welder will work just fine. What welder do you have access to, whats its maximum wire size/amperage?

I have never seen a flat bed on a S10. May look good. Defiantly looking forward to this.

once it gets a little warmer by me so I can work or find another job so I can pay for materials I will start the bed. My brother thinks its a bad idea for me to do this but I am not going to listen to him. I tried to tell him the plans for the truck and he insists to leave it the way it is. I guess he doesnt understand that I am bored with the truck and want it to be huge and somewhat unique.

I would rather the bed because I might change my mind and I would be able to transfer the bed to another S10 if I find one, looking for an ext cab.

Dave: From what I understand, he'll be putting a 350 in later this summer? I know he plans on the 350...I think its in the fall at some point though.

I dont know when half the stuff will be done, I dont plan on just getting any 350 and slap it in there. I plan on making it nice and have more power, so for all I know I could be working on this for 2 years.

Im not starting until my job starts so I have money for material. I plan on working this weekend so I will be getting at least 100 and I am going to sell A bunch of s10 stuff I have sitting around. Im just throwing it out there but I think it might cost around 1000 to do the bed or more. Plus my brother has his gears and getting a locker for his truck and almost ready to go on the sand when it opens, so I have to save for a trip to go up there with my quad.
