GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz spoke to journalists this morning in Los Angeles, where he highlighted GM's strong product portfolio, skipping any mention of the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. We asked him what the future held for these small pickups. It doesn't sound promising.
"It's uncertain at this point," Lutz said. "They may well [go away]."
GM hasn't officially announced whether the Colorado and Canyon will be refreshed, replaced or jettisoned. Last year, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said it was GM's plan to end production at the Shreveport plant where the twin trucks are produced by 2012.
Ford has said production of its Ranger compact pickup will end by 2011, and Chrysler has said the Dodge Dakota will end production next year, though the Dakota is likely to be replaced by a small unibody pickup.

I think the diesel 1500/F150 will get good enough MPG to make it not worth having a small pickup in their lineups.

I was just thinking about my truck this weekend(after driving the Travelle). I love my truck. It's perfect for what I need.

-fits four people easy, can fit five
-decent gas milage(for my taste, could always be better)
-I don't have to crawl into it or crawl out. I'm 6'3"ish
-been able to haul anything I've needed to. Along with trailers. The bed fits my motorcycle.
-The power is no where near my car, but it has power and it goes. (with my few addons)
-Not too bad to work on, it's an easy motor.
-fits in parking spots/places perfect
-I like the way it looks

One thing though, a lot of people like compact pickups for their size.

I'm not sure if Ford is going ahead with a 1/2T diesel or not but GM put their 4.5L 1/2T diesel on indefinite hold for some reason.

I guess that will just leave Imports as the sole source of trucks less than fullsize.

but will the demand make it worth keeping them in production? I think ONE of the big three might benefit from keeping their small pickup, but only if they are the sole provider for that market from the big three.

I'm also wondering if its advantageous to drop them in order to meet the upcoming CAFE standards.

How come?

I drove one and it was for some working conditions. Threw the jackhammer and few tools in the back. Then drove it up to the house I was working on, drove just like a car all the way there(minus a bit of weight).

I actually do have half a mind to buy one down there and ship one back up here some day.

cause it looks like something a rich redneck would make out of a newer sports car IMO.

The problem with the utes is the 2 door thing. Except for the Baja. I kinda like those.

most of the time, in my truck, it's just me and a passenger.. so it would work out great.
